2018 is the year millennials will take over. Let’s go back to last year. A lot of people got “famous” just off of social media alone. You know what I’m talking about. You probably follow Jess Hilarious, the comedian whose funny videos went viral. She also appears on Nick Cannon’s Wild N’ Out. Or maybe you follow Jasmin “Jazzy” Brown, who went from her funny ghetto as “Toya” videos along with other ones as herself, who now has a spot on 50 Cent’s show, 50 Central. Those are just two social media stars to name a few but I think you get the point. Social media is more about being social. It’s about garnering a following so you can highlight your skills and brand.
But that’s not the only thing millennials are taking over. We are taking over TV too. There are at least two shows you should watch out for this year. Ones that truly identify with millennials, especially millennial women.
· The Bold Type
The Bold Type premiered its first season last summer. And let me tell you I actually loved it. It premiered after Pretty Little Liars aired its last season. The Bold Type portrays three 20 something year olds in New York City pursuing their career goals. They work at a magazine that is based off of The Cosmopolitan Magazine. One works as a social media manager, one as a writer, and the other wants to do fashion. This show really speaks to millennial women because it high lights a lot of things we go through on a daily basis. We struggle with our career choices, we struggle with who we are, we struggle with being successful, and so much more. And this show highlights all of those issues. I also like it because it shows how much social media is a big part of our lives. I mean let’s be honest, we always have our phones in our hands, and if you see someone your age without it, you would find that a bit odd.
Grownish also just premiered this year. Now what I really like about this one is how it focuses on a young black girl just trying to make it through college. It highlights everything millennials deal with as well. From the use of hashtags to the struggle of maintaining friendships and relationships. It hasn’t been on long yet, but already I can see that this show is one for the young black millennials, both men and women.
So I suggest you watch these shows, they are really relatable.
It’s important to note that this is your time as a millennial. You have the tools to become what you want. It’s literally right in your hand. Many of us don’t want to work for corporate jobs and a lot of us are looking to work for ourselves. So, to me this is the year to do that. It’s the year to take over and go after your dreams. Don’t be afraid of become social media famous. Because for some people, they are doing it and making big money. Don’t be afraid to go after your career goals, you can do it!
